Megabit vs Megabytes is a common confusion among internet users. From ISP’s claiming greater speeds in the terms of megabits to user’s confusing them with megabytes leading to internet speeds drastically below the expectations of the user’s.

First of all, let’s understand what is all about megabits and megabytes. The very first thing is the denotation for MEGABYTES we use MB(both letter in caps) and for MEGABITS we use Mb(letter b is in small caps) this is the main confusion where ISP’s takes a hit on the consumers. As the only difference between the both is letter b casing.
Where the Confusion in Megabits vs Megabytes?
Now, the confusing part is where the ISP’s advertise the speeds in a tricky manner. You very often see the advertisements of ISP’s providing 50Mbps or 100Mbps or so, and you get excited just by thinking that you will be getting 50 MEGABYTES per second leading to much faster downloads, but once you are opt-in for the connection the speed you really get is way lower.
Why less speed?
Here is the trick in the advertisement part, as you can see the ISP’s have mentioned 50Mbps and as I have mentioned above Mb is for megabit and now,here is the trap which you will be able to understand with the table below:
- 1 byte = 8 bits
- 1 megabyte = 8 megabits
- 1 gigabyte = 8 gigabits
- 1 Mbps = 1/8 = 0.125 MBPS
- 50 Mbps = 50/8 = 6.25 MBPS
- 100 Mbps = 100/8 = 12.5 MBPS
So, as you can see above 1byte = 8 bits meaning 1 MEGABYTE is equal to 8 MEGABITS. And in the case of 50Mbps as its in reality 50 MEGABITS per second, in order to find out the approximate speed will be by dividing it with 8 which in this case will be 6.25 MEGABYTES.
See what a huge difference, from 50Mbps to 6.25MBPS. Its all about the advertising tricks. And if we take 100Mbps scenario then the real approximate speed you will be getting will be 100/8 which equals to 12.5 MEGABYTES.
Why Mbps instead of MBPS?
ISP’s use these tricks to impress the consumers, as you can see 50Mbps is more attractive then mentioning 6.25MBPS. These are all marketing tricks. I must admit these are foolish tricks but we cannot change them instead we now know the formula to calculate the real approximate speed we will be getting, because I must say we are not going to get full juice of 6.25MBPS but still, we can now make out what we will be getting.

Internet providers have adapted the megabit as a standard for speed measurement. It makes more sense for internet service providers to do this considering data is sent as single bits at a time. Using this unit of measurement is more accurate and organized.
I must say the way ISP’s advertise is not fully correct and transparent, As for most of the consumers these terms are still unfamiliar and confusing leading to frustrating results than expectations. But as we all know there is a stiff competition going on in the market and everybody is trying to sell their product making it appear way more attractive by using similar terms.
